Try to encourage your students to prepare for careers that are in high demand so their is a market/jobs when they graduate from college.   For example, starting salaries for entry level jobs for students with a BS in engineering are $70K and higher.

There is a shortage in our country of young people majoring in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math). The new term also refers to STEEAM and this includes English and the Arts. Many Engineering schools are now combining liberals arts with Engineering. Some Engineering schools also combine their curriculum with business.

The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) is a national association of energy professionals dedicated to ensuring the input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussions and developments of energy policies, regulations, R&D technologies and environmental issues. AABE is also committed to increasing and developing minority professionals and to that end has created a scholarship program for minority high school seniors, who will be attending a four year college and majoring in science, technology, engineering, math and business with a goal of participating in the energy industry. For more information about AABE, you may visit the web site at

For 2014, Washington, DC Chapter of AABE (DCAABE) is delighted to announce that it will award three (3) scholarships to deserving High School Seniors in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, who are of African American, Hispanic or Native American descent (underrepresented minorities in the energy industry). All awards will be strictly MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS and will not be based on financial need.

DCAABE will award a total of $6,000 in scholarship monies: (1) First Place Award of $2,500; (2) Second Place Award of $2,000 and (3) Third Place Award of $1,500. DCAABE may forward the top winner?s application to the Mid-Atlantic Region to compete for a Regional Award of $3,000. Additionally, a Premier Award of $5,000 is given annually to the candidate who is judged to demonstrate the most outstanding achievement and promise. DCAABE also plans to have a Scholarship Awards Luncheon to honor our awardees in June 2014 (date to be announced later). You may access the DCAAABE web site by visiting the national web site or you may access it by using the following web site address:

DCAABE would appreciate your disseminating this to high school seniors. The Application for the DCAABE Scholarship must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2014 and if mailed or emailed by that date to the mailing or email address indicated in the Guidelines. Please see the Application for further eligibility requirements and other details. Please note that if there is a social security number on any of the student documents, it should be redacted. Sincerely,Marcia C. Hooks, DC AABE Scholarship Chair
